The 2010 Challenge

In May 2009, the City of Surrey partnered with Right To Play to embrace the spirit and energy of 2010 and make a difference for global citizenry. Around that time, as the City became immersed in its 2010 Community Plan and related opportunities, we turned our attention to our greatest asset: our people. As a vibrant and progressive community and City in transition, we knew the best way to take our City to the next level and remain true to our “future lives here” City identity was to remain focused on greatness. Our motto for 2010 is: “when children play the world wins” which aspires to showcase the great things that can be achieved by working together toward an important cause.

In the Schools

The program began in Surrey’s schools on September 21st 2009 and will bring a team of Olympians and youth leaders to more than 130 schools in Surrey through the support of Right To Play Athlete ambassadors. The school initiative is exclusive to Surrey during the lead up to the Games and will proudly reach more than 70,000 students.

In addition to receiving inspiring and motivating presentations with an Olympic theme, students along the way learn important lessons and messages that emphasize: hope, respect, social responsibility, goal setting, leadership, teamwork, and the importance of active living , sport, & healthy play. The program will inspire and encourage children in Surrey to be more physically active while promoting ideals of fair play and cooperation.

The program will continue through to the 2010 Winter Games. During the school visits, students are issued a challenge to do their own thing in support of Right To Play. A portion of any funds raised by schools or community groups goes to children around the world and another portion remains in student programs permanent to Surrey.

Our Community Challenge for 2010: A Challenge for Children

Since we launched the Challenge for Children program in our community, Surrey's children have shown incredible passion for making a difference for Children around the world and the sense of community pride is sure to leave a legacy for years to come. There are many leadership teams working actively in our community as we speak in support of Right To Play. They are inspired by the idea of helping children around the world and are already doing amazing things. The City believes that 2010 is “our time to shine” and our chance to show the world we are truly a world-class City engaged in the 2010 spirit. No other BC community will be able to say they made a difference like Surrey will in 2010, we have a goal, we are engaged in the 2010 spirit and we know we as a community will be proud of our successes! It is projected that our community will raise well over $250,000 in time for the 2010 Winter Games.
